Automation starter checklist

A first automation should be small, testable, and tied to one clear entry event. MailerLite documents workflows as trigger → sequenced rules/actions; ActiveCampaign documents building from scratch or importing Marketplace recipes such as welcome series. This checklist translates those official patterns into steps you can verify on vendor help pages—without ROI claims.

Checklist: trigger

  1. Choose one primary trigger MailerLite documents among: joins a group, completes a form, clicks a link, updated field, event anniversary, exact date, or joins a segment.
  2. If you need multiple entry paths, confirm whether your MailerLite plan allows up to three triggers on one workflow.
  3. In ActiveCampaign, decide whether you will start from scratch or import a Marketplace recipe (ActiveCampaign documents 200+ recipes, including welcome series).
  4. Write the trigger in one sentence: “When X happens, contact enters Welcome v1.”

Checklist: sequence design

Building blockOfficial roleStarter tip
Delay / wait MailerLite Delay pauses before the next step; ActiveCampaign welcome drip recipes use wait steps (examples: 1 day, then 6 days). Never stack multiple emails with zero delay unless you truly intend simultaneous delivery—MailerLite warns emails without delays send together.
Condition / If-Else MailerLite Condition branches on fields, groups, or campaign activity. ActiveCampaign welcome recipes check opens before choosing a follow-up path. Branch on one clear signal first (opened email / clicked link) before deep trees.
Send email Primary action in both platforms’ builders. ActiveCampaign recommends sending a welcome email as soon as someone subscribes; keep the first message short and factual.
Group / tag updates MailerLite copy/move/remove group actions; ActiveCampaign add-tag actions (welcome drip tags “Onboarded” at the end). Tag completion so contacts do not re-enter the same series endlessly.

Checklist: activate safely

  1. Draft all emails and subject lines before activation.
  2. Send yourself a test path for the happy branch and the no-open branch if you use conditions.
  3. MailerLite: remember a new workflow only auto-enrolls contacts who meet the trigger after activation; existing subscribers may need a manual add if your process requires it.
  4. ActiveCampaign: after importing a recipe, edit list triggers, wait times, and email drafts so they match your brand and list.
  5. Pause before large edits; MailerLite documents pausing workflows when changing live steps.
  6. Monitor the automation activity/reporting view for stuck steps—MailerLite notes a failed step blocks the next one.

Minimal welcome series outline

  1. Trigger: joins list/group or completes signup form.
  2. Email 1 immediately: confirm signup, set expectations, link to preference or content hub.
  3. Wait 1–2 days (adjust to your cadence).
  4. Condition: opened Email 1?
  5. Yes → Email 2 with deeper product education. No → Email 2b with a clearer subject and shorter body (pattern used in ActiveCampaign’s welcome series recipe).
  6. Wait several days; send a final onboarding tip.
  7. Tag/group as onboarded; end workflow.

Treat the sample waits as editorial scaffolding. ActiveCampaign’s published Welcome Drip Series example uses a 1-day wait then a 6-day wait, but you should choose timing that matches how often you already email.
